Watch out ? Watch Out! There’s a Bag thief about!

At the weekend there was yet another story of a handbag being stolen from a supermarket trolley – this time in Morrisons, somewhere in Wales.

Be very careful girls – especially over the Bank Holidays this month. Supermarkets are easy pickings.

They put those very handy little hoops on the trolley just under where you push – so that you can hang your handbag on it rather than struggle trying to keep your bag on your shoulder whilst pushing that confounded trolley (you know – the one that wants to go in the opposite direction to where-ever you have pointed it).

The problem with those little hooks is that when the shop is busy, you might need to leave your trolley a few feet away from the items you want to grab on the aisle. Can you really be bothered to unhook your handbag and take it with you for a few seconds?

Not really.

And that’s when it happens – your attention is distracted – literally for seconds and that’s when the bad thieves strike.

If your bag is open and you are lucky – they might just pick up your purse or your mobile, because in this way you probably won’t notice anything has gone until you get to the till. By that time they are long gone.

If you are really unlucky and especially if your trolley is at or near the end of the aisle – the bad itself might go. End of aisles are easier for quick getaways.

So – don’t think “it won’t happen to me”, because it can happen to anyone – it only takes a second!

Someone should invent an exploding purse which leaves red dye all over anyone if the bag is taken more than a certain distance away from the remote control hanging on your key ring. Perhaps they could rig up an electric shock device. You see how much I love my handbag!! Been watching too much James Bond obviously.

Anyway – be careful – and don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Hilary Clinton likes her Pink Bag – well whats not to like?

Pink Bags are always in fashion – there are so many shades of pink – from baby pink, to flesh tones, to salmon and Hot Pink to what my Mum used to call Blue/Red (mostly in reference to lipsticks to be fair. But one thing is always true – pink bags get noticed and make you feel good.

So – Whilst her outfits are often quite masculine – with the obligatory pants suits – I guess it is no surprise to hear that Hilary Clinton is just a big girlie – like the rest of us – when it comes to pink bags. Her Hot Pink favourite is a Ferragamo – mine is a little less expensive than that – but whether yours is a Radley or a Prada, a Marc Jacobs or a Chanel or just a good old Marks & Spencer, what is important is that you love it.

As Hilary says “I do love a good handbag!” When asked if handbags are uniters or dividers of women she replied “I think they could be either a great divider or uniter,” she replies. “I’m on the uniter side. I think no one should make fun of anyone else’s handbag choices.” She warms to the topic. “I think we should be united in our support of one another. Because [handbags are] like a deep psychological need. It’s a desire to kind of organize and contain that which is important to you in your daily life. I have a philosophical view about this, and I have this Ferragamo hot-pink bag that I adore. My view was that I would carry it around only in spring, but it makes me so happy, I’m even now lugging it around in January. I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?“

How to make your handbag last longer

You loved it – you couldn’t really afford it but you bought it anyway, so you might as well get the most wear you can out of your lovely new bag! Whether it is a Prada, Louis Vitton, Hermes, Radley or Marks & Spencer here are a couple of quick tips for keeping your bag in tip top condition.

1. USE A HANDBAG HANGER. There are more germs and dirt on the bottom of most handbags than in a toilet bowl – so as well as being good for hygiene and preventing stomach bugs (after chucking it on the toilet floor, restaurant or bar floor, office floor – where does it go in your house? Kitchen surface? Dining Table?) the trusty handbag hanger also prevents scuffs and scrapes on the bottom of your bag.
2. A little care and attention. When you change your bag over or once a week if using the same bag – wipe over with a (slightly) damp cloth for manmade bags – or use a little leather polish on a dry cloth and buff up well. In the case of suede bags – a quick once over with a suede brush will bring it up nicely. Any of these might take 2 or 3 minutes – so its not a big deal.
3. STORAGE. There’s no point taking care not to damage your bags and keep them in nice condition if you throw them in the bottom of the wardrobe between uses. Keep them on a shelf in a bag – most bags nowadays come with a dust bag – if not you can make your own out of white (not yellow) dusters loosely stitched together. Better that a bag is a box – either cardboard or preferably plastic (so you can see whats in it). Make sure you keep the silica gel sachets that come in new handbags and keep them in the boxes to prevent moisture damage.
4. Final tip – get stuffed!! If you put foam, or crumpled paper (again I prefer white or quality brown to newspaper – as the print can dirty pale interiors), into your bags when not in use they will keep their beautiful shapes.

It doesn’t take long to look after your bags. If you do you will get years more use out of them.

More about that Zandra Rhodes woman!

Did you all see Zandra Rhodes on Strictly Come Dancing – It Takes Two, last week?? Well on the positive side – she is looking good for 70. On the perhaps not so positive – PLEASE Pink Hair and Orange Lipstick with Green Eyeshadow – really do not go Zandra. As Lee Evans might have said – I thought it was a Puffin!
Anyway – Zandra has just launched her own handbag range – and rather nice they look too. And this week this fashion legend was in York praising the work of Pocklington School fashion students (Monday 13 december 2010) for their artwork.

8 students had their bag design efforts appraised at an event launching her new range of handbags in Brown’s department store on Saturday 11th December 2010.

Apparently one of the shoppers even wanted to buy some of the bags (hope she wanted to buy one of Zandra’s too!).

What men don’t understand about the importance of handbags.

Yes – we all know shoes and bags are a girlie thing – and like many of the differences between men and women the love of bags and shoes is not understood by most men.

My husband for example, has 3 pairs of shoes at any one time – one for work, one for casual, one for posh do’s and a pair of trainers and perhaps a pair of sandals for the summer. OK – I know that’s 4.

I, on the other hand, as of todays date – 7th December 2010 – have at least 60 pairs – and that could be a serious under-estimate.

Where shoes are concerned it is about expressing personal style, being co-ordinated with your outfit, being conscious of the terrain and being conscious of the company (are you walking over cobbles, standing for a long time or doing a mammoth shop with your Mum/kids – in which case lower the heels slightly – or are you going for dinner where standing time will be minimal but the opportunity to flaunt your gorgeous heels out of the side of the table at your date / other half will be maximised – in which case go for the drop dead gorgeous sky scraper heels).

The same goes for bags – my husband has one wallet – and everything else goes in a coat pocket (or my bag). Whereas, I have a number (not telling) of beautiful bags from various well known and lesser known designers / brands.

Despite the very brand conscious world in which we live – it might surprise you to know that most girls actually buy bags they really love, not just the latest offering from Hermes, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Radley, Lulu Guinness or whoever else their favourite designer is.

And like shoes – we buy for a number of reasons from personal style and personality, to occasion, to outfit matching to the pure joy of owning a new handbag.

But none of this totally explains why we have so many shoes and bags.

No…. the real reason for that is that they contain our precious memories. I can still remember the first time I wore my first ever pair of (2nd hand) Louboutins. It was on a client visit in Bristol.

I can also remember the excitement of buying my first designer bag and sitting with it in Cloud Bar at Manchester’s Hilton feeling – literally – on top of the world!

And it’s not just the memory of the bag – but of everything in the bag that makes us hang on to every bag we have ever owned, no matter how dog eared!

I was looking through an old favourite yesterday and in it I found a letter from a very good friend who sent a precious photo of the family all together from the last time she visited – this turned out to be the last ever photo of the whole family before my Dad passed. There was also an old perfume bottle that evoked many memories immediately – as smells always do. There was an old dummy (or dodie as my kids used to call them) which brought back immediate sweet memories of my kids when they were toddlers. There was a handbag hanger (obligatory for me in every bag I own), a receipt from La Tasca (friends birthday) and a price list from a local beauty salon (my birthday). There was a business card of a work contact I had lost touch with and the necessary strip of paracetamol and wad of tissues.

Having intended to clear out the contents and throw away the bag – what could I do but carefully place everything back in that time capsule and put it back safely in my wardrobe where it can be revisited again and again.

And I am betting the blokes still don’t understand….. 

How to find the perfect handbag on a budget!

How to find the perfect handbag on a budget!

Millions of women all over the world spend hours online and in retail shops / shopping centre’s looking for the absolutely perfect handbag. The problem is that most of us can’t afford the designer bags we see everyday in the celebrity and fashion magazines. Just one Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Hermes, Lulu Guinness, Burberry, Coach or other designer bag can easily put you back 5 figures and is more than most of us make in a year.
So how do you find a great bag at a great price?
Making sure you get a good deal is not just for the budget conscious – in this economy no-one can afford to waste money. Finding a dream handbag or clutch bag for much less than expected can make the time spent searching worthwhile. If you know where to look and what you are looking for – you can find bargains even in Gucci, Prada or Burberry bags – and definitely in the more mid range Jane Shilton.
Start with the website of the brand you really want, and go from there. Check the prices on the official website and then do a search for other sites that carry the brand. On sites such as Amazon.co.uk, brand-named handbags can be found at a discount (30% or even higher). If you know how to spot a genuine X Factor bag then a touch of bidding on eBay can be brilliant fun and nab you a real bargain. Outlet centres like Cheshire Oakes can also throw up incredible bargains. You may need to check back over several weeks until your perfect handbag is available through eBay or in an discount outlet, but if you have the time and patience, it’s well worth the wait.
And don’t forget to check our pre-loved, gently worn designer bags sections at www.justaboutbags.com
If You Can’t Afford Designer, Go for the Look
Most non branded manufacturers will follow the seasons trends – see separate blog article on whats hot at the moment – so pick a quality manufacturer so you know the product will stand up to the test of time (check out our Nova bags and Taurus Leather Bags) – and then pick something on trend. No-one will ever know!
Don’t just buy the cheapest
With all the options available, settling for a poorly-constructed handbag should not even be considered. It doesn’t cost a thing to do your research before you step one foot in any store, so check the websites or ask a friend who’s fashion sense you admire, but don’t buy just any bag.
Your accessories not only set off your outfit – they say something about who you are – or at least who you are on a particular day. So make sure you pick something you love. There is nothing like a new handbag to boost our self esteem and positive mental attitude.

Remember – you can never have too many shoes or bags!

So its not just me – the Queen loves Handbag Hangers

“A purse on the floor means money out the door”.

Old wives tale?  Maybe – but what is a fact is that when handbags are put on dirty floors they become carriers for all sorts of nasty germs.

Apparently America’s favorite doctor, Dr. Oz, says that womens handbags are literally buses that transport viruses around, like colds, salmonella and the flu, to name but a few.

The answer to this danger is a handbag hook – I carry 2 in each of my bags – one for me and one for whichever friend I am having lunch with!   Equally useful in the office or in a toilet – the handbag hanger offers a simple solution. Just hook the base on a table, desk or over the toilet door and slip the straps of your handbag over the hook – the heavir the better.

The Queen probably thinks the rest of us are a bit late catching on, seeing that HRH has been carrying hangers in her handbags for years.

According to fashion insiders, the Queen has always known how to treat her luxury bags, and all desks and tables in her various hoems are fitted with purse hooks!

The bag hanger – or as our US colleagues call it – the purse hook has evolved into many shapes and sizes. The classic design comes in a variety of fun or elegant tops that are attached to metal hooks, normally available in silver or gold. Felt or rubber undersides secure it to the table top.

In 2010, other alternatives appeared on the market, including folding hangers.

Foldable Handbag Hanger

Protect your favourite bags from dirt and germs

The folding purse hook features a disc shaped metal plate with felt or rubber backing. The hook section folds around the disc and becomes about the size of a large coin. You can tuck it away in your wallet with your change.

The prices  can run from about £7 to about £20 depending on how blingy you like your accessories.

And if you don’t believe that putting your handbag on the floor is bad luck – think again! Feng shui experts would tell you that a bag or purse on the floor shows a disregard for order, your wealth and your money.

So – it might be time to buy one now!  If so – buy one here
